VIC PGA – Practice Round

The Victorian PGA is on this week at Sandhurst GC, North Course. The course is in superb condition and given the hot weather should prove quite a test.

I’m pleased to return after a short break and the renewed energy should hold me in good stead.

Break time and then back into it!

Some may be wondering why I’m
not playing the NZ PGA this week. I decided to not play the event and make sure I had a good break to get ready for the training ahead.

Since I started training seriously for golf in 2003 I cannot remember a time when I had more than 1 week away from my clubs. I’ve always just been so happy to play the game, to train, to think of better ways to shoot lower scores. Towards the end of last year things started to change. The fatigue started to show and I realized I was actually burnt out. That was something I have never experienced before as I love the game so much but no matter how much you love something you need time away from it to refresh. So I’ve had a good break and will recommence training again next week in preperation for the VIC PGA.

I must say my body is feeling very refreshed and I look forwards to getting back into a solid season of training. It’s nice to give the body a rest from having to swing in the same repetitive motion.

May as well sit in the clubhouse and drink beer playing like that. Although the way I’m going I’d probably miss my mouth and spill it all over myself.

FINAL ROUND
Gee it’s great to have status on the Australian Tour again for next year. The top 35 from the Tour School get full status on the Australian Tour for 2010. The top 60 are allowed to be Tournament members.

I hit the ball very poorly this week, but for three of the four days I chipped and putted sensationally. To get through the way I was hitting it… I’m pretty pleased. So now the golfing year draws to an end for me which I never thought would come. I’m really looking forwards to a break away from golf, however, I’m not sure how long that will be as the Australian Tour starts up again in January. I may skip the Victorian Open and start up in New Zealand.

3RD ROUND
There was a storm delay after my 6th hole when I was 1 under. I struggled after the storm delay in the wind and rain.

2ND ROUND
Just plodding along.

1ST ROUND
Low scores are there to be had. It’s going to be very hot tomorrow so a 7:10 tee time should be very handy.

ROUND 2
I’m disappointed with the scores I’ve put on the board and am really looking forwards to going home and doing some practice for a few months to work on things. But before I head home I will be going to the Australian Qualifying School this Tuesday to obtain status in Australia.

After that, break time :-)

ROUND 1
I woke up this morning with a sore neck and splitting headache which resulted in me vomiting a few times before I headed out. Something slid out in my neck during the night. Not a great start to the day at all. You certainly can’t play your way out of a slump. You need to sit down, reassess things and go off and work on them.

Back in Queensland, on the lovely Sunshine Coast, beautiful one day perfect the next…. now we’re talking! It’s great to be back near home playing in Queensland’s premiere golf event, the Australian PGA. The holiday atmosphere up here is great for a golf tournament. The Hyatt Regency Coolum is such a relaxing place. Most players have bought their families along to stay with them at the resort and enjoy the week.

Now, let’s talk about the changes to the course. From my point of view I’m rather reserved. I’ve never played the course before but anyone could see the character of the new holes hasn’t quite settled in with the character of the other holes yet. Will they over time? I hope so. I played the practice round with Craig Parry and Steve Conran whom are both very familiar with the Coolum layout. The boys happily shared their opinions about the nature of the new holes… Let’s just say they thought the old holes were pretty darn good.

Overall the course is a beautiful layout with many challenging tee shots and approaches. Along with the great layout are the beautifully maintained bermuda greens which are as good as you’ll get in Queensland.

Here’s to a good event.

Australian Open – Practice Round

The Aussie Open… my first Aussie Open!! Boy it’s great to be playing in my national championship for the first time and I get to do it around NSW Golf Club, one of Australia’s best! There’s signature holes everywhere on this golf course. The two that probably stand out the most are the 5th and 6th with their spectacular ocean views.

I played some practice holes with Gareth Paddison and Craig Spence this week which was good fun. The practice round conditions were unbelievably tough with a strong southerly wreaking havoc. The wind was blowing the balls off some greens! They were the sort of conditions where play would be called off. In the end it was just good fun playing a round in such crazy conditions.

However, from weather forcasts, we can expect some slightly milder weather starting from Thursday which means some players are going to actually break par! It’s a fair test of golf even without gale force winds. It’s going to be fun.

There’s some good signs in my game with plenty of birdies still happening, I’m just really struggling for confidence with the woods at the moment. I think next week I’m going to be playing with a bag full of irons at the Australian Open :-)
