Australian PGA Championship – 2nd Round

MC Nathan Uebergang (+20) 87 75

ROUND 2
I’m disappointed with the scores I’ve put on the board and am really looking forwards to going home and doing some practice for a few months to work on things. But before I head home I will be going to the Australian Qualifying School this Tuesday to obtain status in Australia.

After that, break time 🙂

ROUND 1
I woke up this morning with a sore neck and splitting headache which resulted in me vomiting a few times before I headed out. Something slid out in my neck during the night. Not a great start to the day at all. You certainly can’t play your way out of a slump. You need to sit down, reassess things and go off and work on them.

Back in Queensland, on the lovely Sunshine Coast, beautiful one day perfect the next…. now we’re talking! It’s great to be back near home playing in Queensland’s premiere golf event, the Australian PGA. The holiday atmosphere up here is great for a golf tournament. The Hyatt Regency Coolum is such a relaxing place. Most players have bought their families along to stay with them at the resort and enjoy the week.

Now, let’s talk about the changes to the course. From my point of view I’m rather reserved. I’ve never played the course before but anyone could see the character of the new holes hasn’t quite settled in with the character of the other holes yet. Will they over time? I hope so. I played the practice round with Craig Parry and Steve Conran whom are both very familiar with the Coolum layout. The boys happily shared their opinions about the nature of the new holes… Let’s just say they thought the old holes were pretty darn good.

Overall the course is a beautiful layout with many challenging tee shots and approaches. Along with the great layout are the beautifully maintained bermuda greens which are as good as you’ll get in Queensland.

Here’s to a good event.

Australian Open – Practice Round

The Aussie Open… my first Aussie Open!! Boy it’s great to be playing in my national championship for the first time and I get to do it around NSW Golf Club, one of Australia’s best! There’s signature holes everywhere on this golf course. The two that probably stand out the most are the 5th and 6th with their spectacular ocean views.

I played some practice holes with Gareth Paddison and Craig Spence this week which was good fun. The practice round conditions were unbelievably tough with a strong southerly wreaking havoc. The wind was blowing the balls off some greens! They were the sort of conditions where play would be called off. In the end it was just good fun playing a round in such crazy conditions.

However, from weather forcasts, we can expect some slightly milder weather starting from Thursday which means some players are going to actually break par! It’s a fair test of golf even without gale force winds. It’s going to be fun.

Live Scoring

There’s some good signs in my game with plenty of birdies still happening, I’m just really struggling for confidence with the woods at the moment. I think next week I’m going to be playing with a bag full of irons at the Australian Open 🙂

It was a nice finish to the event with the best round of my week, a 65 which included 4 consecutive birdies from the 10th. Let’s see if I can carry this momentum into the NSW Open next week at the Vintage GC, a beautiful Greg Norman designed course in the Hunter Valley region.

Live Scoring

This week has been a really good experience for me. It was actually my first main tour event I’ve played in Australia and for it to be an event with Tiger Woods in the field, soaking up the massive crowds he helped draw to the event, it was invaluable experience.

On day one I struggled with nerves and expectations. I choked up on a lotof shots and didn’t feel free at all. On the second day I started to settle down a lot, had a better feel for my swing and started hitting some quality shots. That made the second round a lot more enjoyable for me and I was able to take something away from the event.

From here I will travel to Woollongong for the NSW PGA.

So the masters is finished and congratialtions must go to the great man Tiger Woods for his stunning play around Kingston Heath.

4TH ROUND

Man, what a bummer. Truly broken by my performance today. It’s disapointing that I won’t be playing in Japan next year. So now I head back to do a little work on my putting and go hard at the Australian summer of events.

3RD ROUND

It’s been a birdie-athon here for me with a lot of stuffed holes as well. I’d like to play 18 “good” holes tomorrow and see what happens.

We have got one SUPER course here. Nishinasuno GC, Tommy Nakajima design, rated one of the best courses in Japan and easily would be top 3 based on it’s fantastic course design. It has a linksy feel to it with huge undulating greens. Great fun to play on. Most Japanese greens tend to be front to back, very bland…. but not this place!

The top 28 players will advance through at our course.

Overall a so so event. Thankfully I started to find my setup again on the back nine today and that should set me in good stead for a weeks time when I head back to Japan for the 3rd Stage of Tour School to regain my card.
