2009 Subaru Victorian Open – 2nd Round (VNT)
T 137 Nathan P Uebergang QLD (+12) 80 74
It was good to put a new swing change into play. I’ve only been working on the change since Sunday so I’ve got to expect it to take a little time to gel.
Spring Valley GC is a very enjoyable golf course and is in fantastic condition for the event, even given the extremely high temperatures. It would have to be one of the most underated golf courses in the Melbourne area. The scoring is quite impressive too considering the temperature was 45*C for the first two rounds. It was sadening to see all the possums lying around the course that couldn’t handle the heat. Poor animals.

Basically I have been moving off the ball by having too much spine tilt away from the target at the top of the backswing. The reason it happens is because my hips rotate too early in the takeaway. They have literally finished their rotation and moved slightly towards the target before the club is halfway back.
So the hips are waiting to start the downswing while the club still has a long way to go to the top. The question is then, “when are the hips going to fire the downswing?”
The answer is, “at any time.” It cannot occur consistently. It’s very hard to get the body parts moving together again on the downswing. So I’m working on keeping my lower body quiet while I move the club back with arms, letting the arms pull the body into its rotation. this keeps my spine in the same angle at address right through the backswing up to the top. I can then sequence the hips, then the shoulders, then the hands nicely on the way down.
End result should be better tempo, rhythm and sequencing to the swing.

If you have a moment, can you tell us what you are doing with your swing, and why.
Good luck for next week.
